Insuring a Toyota in Canada

Toyota car owners, like all others, are required by the Canadian government to have car insurance. The reason why car insurance is mandatory is because so many accidents occur on a day to day basis that if people didn’t have car insurance, who else would pay for the damages and injuries involved? Most people don’t have enough money on hand to pay for the losses they cause other people. This type of loss is called liability. Liability is a legally enforceable obligation. Liability insurance is the most basic form of insurance and is required by law everywhere in Canada.

Types of Automobile Protection

You are also required to carry accident benefits/bodily injury (AB/BI) insurance in Canada. This type of insurance provides coverage for their own medical expenses and loss of income resulting from driving related injuries. Voluntary insurance coverage that the government does not require includes collision coverage and comprehensive coverage. Collision coverage provides coverage if your car becomes damaged in an accident. Comprehensive coverage provides coverage if your car becomes damaged through methods other than an accident. Such methods may include vandalism, weather and theft.

Each Province is Different

How car insurance works varies from province to province. For example, in most provinces car insurance is provided by private companies but in the provinces of British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, you have to buy part of your insurance from the government. Some provinces have no-fault car insurance while others do not work that way. Amounts of required coverage may also vary amongst the provinces.

If you are involved in a collision in your Toyota, there are several things you should do immediately after the accident. In some cases, the first thing you should do is call the police. The police should be called when someone is hurt, if you suspect that a driver involved has committed a criminal act like driving drunk, or if there is a great deal of property damage. If none of the above is evident, then there is no reason to call the police just yet. You should try to move your car to the side of the road as not to impede traffic. If you can’t, then turn on your hazard lights or use a flare to signal to other motorists that they’ll need to go around you.

You should write down all the information you can think of regarding the accident, such as how it happened, time, date, location, speeds of cars involved and road conditions. Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver. Make a quick sketch of the accident and take a photo of the scene.
