History of Volkswagen in Canada

The first Volkswagen automobiles were sent to Canada in 1952. That order consisted of 12 vehicles, one of which was an ambulance. These first VWs made a splash at the Canadian National Exhibition in August of that year and by 1955 the company had built a manufacturing plant in Scarborough, a city which is now a part of Toronto.

The popularity of the Volkswagen Golf in the second half of the 1970s helped push the VW brand into the hearts and minds of Canadians. The Golf followed in the footsteps of the Austin Mini and was a car that was both stylish and affordable, making it a popular competitor of the cars produced by Honda and Toyota at the time.

Today Volkswagen is Europe’s largest manufacturer of automobiles. To learn more about other manufacturers click here.
